Tips to "Beat the Heat" in Your Garden

Summer heat can wreak havoc on your garden. Since the temperature won't be cooling anytime soon, we asked Meadowbrook Farm's Jessica Story for some tips to keep your plants healthy in hot weather.

For plants in pots

  • During periods of extreme heat, move your container plants and hanging baskets—even those that love the sun—to an area where they can get some shade.
  • When you water your container plants, be sure you’re soaking the soil thoroughly. It may be necessary to re-water.
  • Water your plants in the morning, if possible, as fungal diseases can develop when leaves are wet overnight.
  • Be sure to check that your plant really needs to be watered. It is possible to over-water plants, even in hot weather.

For plants in the ground

  • If you haven’t done so yet, consider mulching with an organic mulch to a depth of 2 inches. Mulch cuts down on soil evaporation and inhibits weed growth---those weeds suck up valuable water!
  • Watering heavily but infrequently is preferable to a light watering every day.
  • Pay close attention to trees and shrubs planted within the last few years. During extreme heat or extended dry weather, you may need to water plants you would normally consider established.
  • Sprinklers are not effective for deep watering. To water an individual tree or shrub deeply, turn your garden hose to a trickle so water soaks into the soil almost as quickly as it comes out of the hose. Lay the hose at the base of the tree a few inches from the trunk for several hours.
  • For this season’s plantings, you should use the original root ball to monitor for moisture. A dry root ball means that the plant needs water, even if the surrounding soil seems moist.
